Hi Mike, I just switched back to conventional oil from AMSoil this Spring, no worries on my part, I'll just change it more often.

I see you live in Toronto, 10W-40 should still be good choice for weight, stick with a name brand motorcycle oil, and it should all be good.

Don't let yourself get bullied into someone else's idea of what's right for you and your bike. Oil is such a wide topic, go with what makes you feel like you did the right thing.

And change the oil as directed by the manufacturer.

And here's how to post pics in a thread

To put a pic in your signature you need to go to the top of the page where your name is and click on the down arrow, choose Settings. Check around in there and you'll see signature on the left side of the screen. the process is quite similar as listed above for posting in a thread.

I hope that helps...

I like the K & N filter because it has a nut welded on the end for easy removal. I use 10/40 royal purple oil, matches the paint color of my bike lol. I've always been of the impression that 10/40 is best in liquid cooled bikes, the 20/50 is for the air cooled bikes imo.
Hahahahaha, purple oil for a purple bike...damn Tman, you kill me....

I use Hondaline oil and change it every 3000 miles. I agree with Bob. Oil has such a wide range of opinions, either stick to what you know or that you are comfortable with. Whatever your choice, make sure it meets Honda minimum specs for oil, recommended for our bikes, and for whatever area you live in.

Amsoil here, 10W30 for engine and 80W90 for the rear end. A K&N filer, KN-204, because it's a good filter and it has the 17 mm nut on top. You'll need a 17 mm wrench for the both the drain plugs (yes this bike has two drain plugs for the engine oil) and the two plugs (one drain and one fill) on the rear end. Every easy to change out the rear end but it's harder (pain) to change out the engine oil but it's easy enough just remember both plugs.

Okay - my OCD is acting up

Regarding oil changes. My 2014 Honda Manufacturers manual says oil and filter change ever 8,000 miles.

8,000 . . .

That's miles, not kilometers . . .

I've never run any motor that long without a change . . . is this a test of some kind?

Please, help me out here. Why? Economics. If the motor and oil are good for 8K, then shouldn't I take

advantage of this economy? Or am I pushing it.

2014 VT1300 Interstate

15K miles and counting

I do mine at 4,000 miles, just did it Saturday for the first time this year. Ideally, I'll put on enough miles to change it at the beginning of the season and somewhere in the middle. 3 times in a year sounds like a much more enjoyable time. The dealer I got my bike at offered a service plan that covered every 2K, that seems overboard.

That was an eye opener, and head scratcher too me too!

You probably know everybody has their own opinion on oil (As well as tires.)

Here's mine . . . I have tried that expensive Amsoil oil after going years with the stock stuff that came from Honda.

I didn't like the actual mechanical sound that came from the engine with the Amsoil, it seemed way too noisy, this was supposed to be a Honda - not a Harley Sportster. After giving Amsoil one shot, I went back to the stock stuff and haven't given it much thought since, it's back to smooth and I figure if Honda built it to run with this "Who am I to argue?"

I ran a K&N filter a few times, and then also went back to the stock filter, it's a little cheaper and as above, if Honda built it to run with this "Who am I to argue?"

I usually change my oil once a year, which varies as the season and what my life allows, but I'm still leaning more towards 3,000 miles between changes, but I'm really not too concerned if it were to sneak up on 5,000 miles which hasn't happened yet.

Our bikes aren't big on horsepower, so what I want in an oil is dependability, that's why stock is fine with me. Some members will tell ya that they use Shell Rotella, or Royal Purple or what have you, the main thing is that you use quality motorcycle oil of the correct weight and change it often.

Truth be told, our beautiful, low RPM, water cooled engines would probably run fine on any decent motorcycle oil, so use whatever kind that makes you sleep better at night.

What the hell is that sound?
